👋 Hi, I'm Spencer and I'm for hire. I am a full-stack, multi-language, cross-platform software engineer with 17+ years of professional experience as an Individual Contributor and Engineering Manager (Senior, Lead and Principal levels). I say professional experience not to include my early childhood days starting on MS-DOS 6.22 using QuickBASIC.

I've worked with databases, back-ends, middle tiers (automation, business logic, parsing/processing/making-sense-of large data-sets), APIs, front-end UIs, CI/CD pipelines, Amazon Web Services, as well as native Windows (WinForms, APIs via P/Invoke), Linux and mobile (iOS) development, in addition to open-source projects. I've owned a multitude of products, many of which were designed and developed from the ground up, owning the complete Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). I have a knack for improving workflows, making automation performant and using regular expressions like nobody's business, except for maybe Henry Spencer himself (see what I did there?), and identifying needs, use-cases and problems to solve with software/workflows. Simply put: I get paid to have a hobby.

While I've been in roles of management (though the primary architect and still writing code), I currently desire to continue in the Individual Contributor career path, having ownership and leadership responsibilities, with ability to be part of architectural and design decisions, mentoring other engineers and collaborating with other teams, as well as having influence not just vertically but horizontally.

While at HP Enterprise Services (which acquired EDS) and Avalara, I was rewarded and promoted multiple times for my dedication, delivery, dependability and quality of work. At HP Enterprise Services I was considered a go-to engineer to investigate and deliver POCs. At Avalara I was considered in the "top 3%" of engineering and one of only six Lead Engineers in the entire company. The duration of tenor at these two companies were ~8.5 years and ~7 years, respectively. I am an advocate of Agile Scrum methodologies and believe in following the ceremonies—I have been instrumental in organizations/teams adopting its framework and principles. I enjoy mentoring engineers, teaching best practices, design patterns, coding standards, and true, effective unit testing.
